Winter Water Woes
February 3, 2025
Recently, our energy specialists have noticed an increase in energy usage related to water leaks. Many of these issues have required remediation companies to help remedy the damage caused by the leaks. As your trusted energy advisors, we recommend homeowners occasionally inspect the mechanics of the home, where potential leaks can be found.
Below are a few recommendations for general home maintenance:
- Always know where your water heater is located and how old it is.
- Know what type of water heater you have, electric or gas, along with the recommended maintenance plan.
- Knowing the location of the water shut-off in your home is essential in case of a leak or broken water line.
- Check your crawl space, basement, or attic periodically for leaks or moisture.
- For potential leaks, examine the plumbing lines beneath your kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities.
- Consider insulating your water lines to prevent them from freezing and bursting.
- During colder temperatures, verify that your water hoses are disconnected from the hose bibs. Consider investing in an insulated cover to protect the hose bibs from freezing temperatures.
