Smart Fridge Habits
April 25, 2026
One of the hardest-working appliances in the home is your refrigerator! Never taking a break, it runs 24/7, keeping your food fresh and safe while maintaining a steady temperature. With a few simple maintenance habits, you can boost efficiency, extend its lifespan, and potentially lower energy costs.
- Keep the coils clean by vacuuming or dusting them at least twice a year. When the coils are dirty, the appliance must work harder, making it less efficient at cooling.
- Avoid placing your refrigerator near any heat sources, such as direct sunlight, ovens, or dishwashers. This helps the appliance maintain the proper temperature without overworking.
- Do not set the temperature colder than necessary. The recommended temperature range is 35 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit, with an optimal temperature of 37 degrees. Freezers should be set to zero degrees.
- Make sure the seals around the doors are airtight and no cold air is leaking through. If they are not, replace them with new seals.
- Minimize the number of times you open the refrigerator door and how long it stays open. Each time the door opens, cold air escapes, making the appliance work harder to return to the set temperature.
- To keep your leftovers safe and fresh, allow them to cool to room temperature before refrigerating. Putting hot food directly into the fridge not only makes it work harder to cool down but also affects the overall freshness of your food.
- If necessary, upgrade to an ENERGY STAR® rated model.
