Seven Ways to Beat the Summer Heat

July 26, 2024

As the temperature rises and summer activities increase, a reliable flow of electricity is essential to

ensure our members stay cool. This month brings some of the most extreme summer temperatures,

leading many to spend more time indoors to avoid the heat. To emphasize the importance of staying cool and saving

energy, here are a few recommendations to help during the summer heat:

1) Use Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are a great investment and can make you feel cooler without lowering the thermostat.

Remember, fans are designed to cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave the room.

2} Close Blinds or Curtains

To keep your home cooler and reduce the strain on your HVAC unit, close blinds or curtains

during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun’s heat.

3) Switch to Energy Efficient Lighting

Replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs. LEDs produce less heat, consume less energy, and have

a longer lifespan. Making the switch reduces the need for frequent bulb replacements and saves you money.

4) Cook Outside or Use Alternative Appliances

Instead of using the oven or stove, which can add to the home’s heat load, try cooking

outside on a grill, or consider using indoor appliances like a microwave, toaster oven, or slow cooker. These

alternative appliances generate less heat and can help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

5) Wash Clothes in Cold Water

Washing your clothes in cold water saves energy by eliminating the need to heat the water. It also

extends the lifespan of your clothes, saving you money in the long run.

6) Replace and Clean Air Filters

Regularly replacing and cleaning dirty air filters can help increase your HVAC system’s

efficiency and improve airflow within your home.

7) Unplug Unused Electronics

Many electronics and appliances generate heat even when not used, known as a phantom load.

Unplugging devices when not needed or using smart power strips to turn them off can reduce unnecessary

heat and help save electricity.

Following these tips will help you stay cool and comfortable with the added bonus of saving money and lowering your energy usage.
