Safety First, Shovel Second

August 1, 2025

Most of us never think about electric, gas, water, and other utility lines buried below the ground, but hitting one of those lines while digging can be very dangerous!

August 11 is 811 Day, and Union Power wants to remind all members planning any projects that require digging to call 8-1-1 at least three business days in advance to have underground utilities marked. This simple and free task not only helps save lives and reduce the risk of injury but also prevents repair costs and inconvenient outages, making your project more cost-effective and hassle-free.

Making this call is a simple and free service that alerts utility companies about your planned digging activity. These companies will send locators to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, spray paint, or both, allowing you to dig safely without disturbing power, water, heat, telephone, sewer, gas, and cable lines.

Before starting any digging project, big or small, it’s important to call 8-1-1. Whether you’re installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, or laying a patio, it’s crucial to dial 8-1-1 before digging. Taking a few minutes to make this call can save you from unnecessary hassle and potential dangers, helping you avoid serious consequences.
