Summer is on the way, bringing longer days and rising temperatures. Now is the time to get ahead of the heat and make sure your home is ready. As your energy provider, we’re here to help you keep your home efficient and comfortable all summer long.
- Seal the Gaps: Prevent cool air from escaping by sealing gaps and cracks around doors and windows with caulk or weatherstripping. Air leaks and drafts force your cooling system to work harder
- Set your Thermostat Wisely: Set your thermostat to 76 degrees Fahrenheit as a baseline for cooling efficiency. For each degree below 76 degrees, energy use may increase by 3–5%. Maintaining a smaller difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures reduces overall energy demand and system load.
- Utilize Ceiling Fans: To reduce strain on your HVAC system, use ceiling fans to improve air circulation. Set the blades to rotate counterclockwise to push cool air down. Don’t forget, fans are designed to cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you are away.
- Replace Air Filters: Change your air filter every 1 to 3 months to maintain optimal airflow and ensure your system operates efficiently. A dirty filter could increase cooling costs and strain your HVAC system.
- Schedule Professional HVAC Maintenance: Maintenance to your HVAC system should be conducted on an annual or biannual basis. A professional will have the right tools and expertise to clean and inspect the unit, replace any defective parts, and ensure it operates efficiently.
