Power On Patrol – Electrifying Law Enforcement: National Drive Electric Week: Sept. 27 – Oct. 6

September 25, 2024

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular among individuals and businesses due to

their numerous benefits, such as instant torque, advanced technology, stylish design, and reduced

maintenance costs. One small local police department in Marshville is taking advantage of these

benefits.

We interviewed the Interim Chief, Steven Fultz, from the Marshville Police Department to understand how

their department has effectively utilized their Tesla Model 3 patrol car for the past three years. Fultz and staff

have used the EV for police operations and have seen firsthand the benefits it has brought to the community

and the department. Fultz states, “When the idea was first introduced, some had hesitations while others

were intrigued.” Initially, it’s a typical response to new technology, but with the EV, the department quickly

realized they had more than just a car–they had a game- changing tool that would reshape their approach.

Unlike traditional vehicles, EVs do not require oil changes and tune-ups. This is especially beneficial for the

department because gas-powered vehicles idle and rack up miles quickly, necessitating frequent maintenance

throughout the year. Compared to a gas-powered vehicle, the department has observed cost-savings and minimal

maintenance with this alternative. Their EV is fully equipped with laptop mounts, radios,

sirens, light controllers, printers, and radar systems and functions just like a gas-powered patrol car. According

to Fultz, “Initially, we had our doubts about using an EV for police work. But after three years on the force, its

performance and benefits have turned even our biggest skeptics into believers. It’s been a paradigm shift for our

department.” If you’re curious about how an EV could benefit you, visit union-power.com/energysavingscalculators
