Hot Tips for Cool Homes

June 3, 2025

As the temperature outside rises and summer activities ramp up, a reliable flow of electricity is essential to ensure our members stay cool. Air conditioners are running longer and harder to keep our homes and businesses cool, while other appliances are also in high demand during the sweltering summer months. While these cooling solutions are essential for comfort, they can also put a strain on your energy usage. As your energy efficiency experts, we advise you to follow the tips below to survive the summer heat.

Ceiling Fans: Utilize your ceiling fans and set the blades to rotate counterclockwise, pushing cool air down. Remember, fans are designed to cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave the room.

Programmable Thermostat: While you are away from home, set your thermostat to the recommended energy-efficient temperature of 76°. Having the capability to adjust your thermostat while you are away provides the comfort of returning the temperature to normal before you get home.

Seal & Air Infiltration: Seal air leaks around windows and exterior doors with caulk and weatherstripping. Air leaks and drafts force your cooling system to work harder.

Blinds & Curtains: During the hottest part of the day, close blinds, curtains, and shades to block unwanted heat from sunlight. Blackout curtains with thermal backing or reflective lining are great resources to block unnecessary heat and light.

As we face the summer heat, these tips will help you stay cool and comfortable, with the added bonus of lowering your energy usage and potentially saving you money.
