Heat Without Hazard
January 3, 2025
Space heaters can be a convenient way to stay warm during cold days. Although they can impact your home’s energy consumption, they can be a good alternative for heating a small area in your home. When considering using a space heater, it’s vitally important to learn how to operate and understand its safety features.
Here are a few operational and safety tips to consider before purchasing and using a space heater.
- The safety certification label. Make sure the heater carries the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label.
- Automatic shut off. The heater will automatically turn off if the space heater is tipped over or the heating elements inside the heater get too hot.
- Select a heater that is effective for the size of the room you want to heat. Most heaters provide a sizing guide to assist you in determining the appropriate model for your space.
- Ensure the heater is on a stable surface with minimal risk of getting knocked over.
- Supervise pets and children. Keep children and pets at least three feet from an electric heater to prevent accidental burns.
- Ensure there is adequate airflow in and around the space heater.
- Never plug a space heater directly into a power strip, as the power strip may not be rated for the energy consumption of the space heater. Always plug the space heater directly into a free outlet.
- Turn off or unplug the heater when leaving the room. Most models come with a programmable timer that automatically turns on and off at set times or temperatures.
By following these safety tips and features, you can enjoy the warmth and comfort of your space heater in your home while minimizing the risk of accidents. Remember, space heaters are designed to be supplemental heaters and not as a primary source for heating.
