Grow Smart: Where, What, and How to Plant Safely

February 3, 2025

In preparation for the beautiful weather of spring, this is the perfect time to start planting around your yard. We are here to guide you with a few tips to consider before planting or placing obstructions around our power lines and equipment, which can be dangerous for you and our utility workers.

Transformer Zone Safety

If you plan on planting around transformer zones, please designate 10 feet away from the transformer or look at the sticker outside the transformer for more information on appropriate distance requirements. If you decide to plant around the transformer, consider a non-woody or low-growing species like Black-Eyed Susan, Daylilies, and Shasta Daisies. These plants should be planted at least five feet away from the unit to not impede access.

Right-of-Way Planting

When planting trees near power lines, consider planting a low-growing species that won’t exceed 20 feet at maturity. Planting them directly underneath the power lines rather than at the edge of the right-of-way can become a safety concern. According to our pruning guidelines, Union Power will cut down or prune trees if they are placed within the right-of-way area.

Why It Matters

Understanding where and how to plant near power lines and equipment is essential for your safety and the efficiency of our cooperative’s operations. Proper planting ensures uninterrupted power supply and reduces the risk of outages and accidents.
