Finalists to be recognized in light of extraordinary circumstances

June 4, 2020

Every year, we look forward to the excitement of connecting with our local North Carolina youth through the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. However, on April 13, we announced the cancellation of the 2020 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. due to ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19.

This decision was unavoidable considering the unpredictability of the pandemic situation and the uncertainty of when it would be safe to resume large group activities.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, and before the cancellation was made official in April, our 2020 candidates were interviewed and selections were made. In light of these unforeseen circumstances, Union Power has decided to recognize those that were selected by awarding them with a one-time college scholarship upon graduating high school next year.

“These students were selected as Youth Tour delegates based on their academic achievement, community involvement, and their demonstrated interest in the Cooperative business model. We know they would have represented the co-op exceptionally well,” said Luanne Sherron, vice president of key accounts and government relations. “Although they are unable to partake in the wonderful experience the Youth Tour brings to our students, we are certain that a college scholarship will be beneficial to them and their futures. We wish them the best of luck.”

It is our pleasure to announce this year’s Youth Tour finalists and special scholarship recipients: Addison Detig from Weddington High School, Lucas Dunker from Marvin Ridge High School, and Shivalee Patel from Piedmont High School.

Congratulations to our finalists!
