A Trip of a Lifetime: Youth Tourists Tell Their Story

August 7, 2024

Each year, Union Power and other electric cooperatives across the country offer high school juniors a unique opportunity to take an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. This trip is not just a sight- seeing tour, but a chance to delve into our nation’s history. It’s also an opportunity to participate in networking events, meet elected officials at the U.S. Capitol, and learn the significance of civic engagement.

Rising seniors Evan Keith, Sarah Hinson, and Felicia Charles represented Union Power in the North Carolina Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. They joined 41 other students from Electric Co-ops in North Carolina to travel to Washington, D.C.

Union Power Communications Specialist Emily Aldridge states, “Youth Tour emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and how politics influences our everyday lives. We hope that the knowledge and skills acquired by the delegates during this trip will benefit them on their journey to success and help them
become our next great leaders, while also helping them understand the significance of American history.”

According to Evan, visiting the Arlington National Cemetery was the most memorable part of the trip.
He emphasized the importance of understanding
the lives lost in American history that have provided
us with the freedoms we enjoy today. Meeting new people from different states who shared his passion for history, leadership opportunities, and the potential for building friendships further enriched the trip by offering opportunities to expand leadership skills beyond high school.

“This is an experience that very few students in the state are able to enjoy. If you can’t stand up for the issues you believe are most important, stand out. Make yourself heard. This is what empowers the future generation of leaders, so go the extra mile and apply,” said Evan.

For Sarah and Felicia, Youth Tour was a stepping stone towards their future careers. They made connections with students from different states, networked, and built relationships. They also enjoyed touring the national monuments, museums, and historical sites, which not only enriched their knowledge, but also broadened their understanding of our nation’s history.

“Applying to Youth Tour was one of the best decisions I have made and I highly recommend it! The people
you will meet and the things you will see will forever be imprinted on you,” said Sarah.
