A Dangerous Current
May 27, 2026
Power theft is a serious issue that can create safety risks for electric cooperatives every year. Not only is this practice dangerous, but it’s also a serious crime that can lead to hefty fines and even jail time.
When electricity is used without proper authorization, it’s known as power theft. This can occur in several ways, such as illegally connecting to power lines, bypassing electric meters, or altering meter readings. These practices are prohibited because tampering with any power equipment can lead to electrical shock, short circuits, fires, and arc flashes that can cause serious bodily harm and damage to property.
It’s a common misconception that power theft only affects the person who committed the crime, but in reality, it affects the entire co-op community. One of the biggest concerns associated with illegal connections is the increased risk they pose to linemen who maintain and repair our system.
As we remain committed to providing safe and reliable electric power, we continually implement new measures to stay ahead of power theft. Member awareness across our co-op community also plays an important role. To report suspected theft, call 704-220-0707. Being mindful of potential meter tampering or power theft helps protect the integrity of our system and supports the safety and reliability our members depend on.
