Outdoor Light Conversion Project
As part of our ongoing effort to improve reliability and energy efficiency, our cooperative is working with our contractor Utility Partners of America (UPA) to convert existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) colonial lantern outdoor lights to new LED outdoor lights.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Outdoor Light Conversion Project? –
We are upgrading existing outdoor lights from High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures to LED fixtures, focusing on colonial lanterns. The goal is to improve reliability, reduce energy use, and provide better lighting quality.
Why is Union Power converting to LED lights? –
LED lighting provides several benefits:
- Uses less electricity
- Reduces maintenance and outages
- Improves nighttime visibility and safety
- Longer fixture lifespan
Is this Project Required or Optional? –
The conversion is part of a multi-year system-wide upgrade. Existing HPS outdoor lights will be replaced with LED fixtures. Members cannot opt-out of the conversion.
When will the conversion happen? –
Conversions will begin early March 2026 and will occur across our service territory. The first year will focus on areas within Union County. Members do not need to schedule this service.
Who will be doing the work? –
Our contractor Utility Partners of America (UPA) will perform LED conversion on our behalf. UPA trucks will have the Union Power Contractor magnet visible.
Will my power be interrupted? –
No. The LED conversion is done externally and should not interrupt electric service to the home or business.
How long does it take to change the light? –
Typically, less than an hour.
Do members need to be home? –
No. Outdoor lights are owned and maintained by the Cooperative, so access to the property is not required.
Will the light look different? –
Members may notice:
- A whiter, brighter light
- More consistent light coverage
- Improved visibility at night
Will my outdoor lighting bill change? –
In most cases, rates will decrease, but all members will benefit from more efficient and reliable lighting. (Note: All lights being converted to LED are within subdivisions and are generally billed to a Town or HOA.)
What happens if my light stops working after the upgrade? –
Members should report the outage at www.union-power.com/outdoorlightrepair. LED lights typically require less maintenance, but we will continue to service them.
Will the poles or wires be replaced? –
No. This project is focused on fixture replacement only.
Why were all the lights in my neighborhood not converted to LED? –
- Access issues: A car or other obstruction may have prevented the crew from safely reaching the light. In these cases, we will work with the HOA or Town to ensure access so the light can be converted at a later date.
- Light type: Some neighborhoods have different styles of lights. This conversion is focused on colonial lantern decorative street lighting.
- Service provider: In the Colonial Village and Windy Ridge neighborhoods, Union Power only maintains a portion of the lights. Other lights are maintained by the City of Monroe, and those lights are not part of this project.
